Goal-based financial planning

Connect your decisions to a time horizon and a realistic budget.

Define the goal

Write down the amount needed, target date and what can change. A home, education and retirement goal can have different deadlines and different capacity for risk.

Set aside essential spending and emergency needs before deciding how much is available for long-term investing.

Build an assumption-led plan

Start with regular contributions, existing assets and a range of return and inflation assumptions. Separate an estimate from a commitment or product recommendation.

Consider liquidity, debt, insurance and the effect of taxes and fees. A projection that ignores these can look more certain than it is.

Review and adjust

Revisit the plan after a job change, new dependant or large expense. If a goal is off track, compare changing the contribution, timing or scope.

Ask for written reasoning behind any proposed product and the risks involved. Keep your plan understandable enough to review yourself.
